Flus and viruses become more active in winter, so boosting your immune system is crucial for staying healthy.

These orange fruits are loaded with vitamin C, E and potassium, with 118 calories per serving.

Nutritionist and founder of the Healthy Mays clinic, Mays Al-Ali, said persimmon has been shown to “lower cholesterol – eat this yummy orange fruit daily”.

A three-pack costs just £1.25 at Tesco, making it a cheaper option compared to three pears at around £1.47 and three pink lady apples at approximately £1.95.

A nutritionist from Bulk.com said, “With this delicious winter fruit, don’t judge a book by its cover. Persimmons appear extremely similar to a tomato, however, its orange, mango-like inner flesh is indulgent and packed with immune-boosting properties.”

Persimmons contain just 0.3 g of fat per serving, and six grams of fiber to help decrease inflammation and aid healthy digestion.

Tannins in persimmon can reduce inflammation by acting against bacteria and reducing infections.

Despite their sweetness, research suggests they could help manage diabetes, by preventing sudden blood sugar spikes.

Persimmons can be eaten fresh, dried, or cooked, and are often used in jellies, drinks, pies, curries, and puddings.

They have a similar mellow flavor to melon, but can be bitter if eaten too soon. The Bulk nutritionist added: “The persimmon tastes like no other fruit, boasting rich, tangy and sweetness all at the same time.”

TikTok chef Jean Choi shared a viral recipe for caramelized persimmon. It’s a quick and healthy alternative to the traditional apple crumble, which contains around 400 calories per serving when made from scratch.

Cut two persimmons in half, add brown sugar and spices, and cook in the air fryer for 20 minutes for a “melt in your mouth” dessert, Choi explains.

Cooking a persimmon brings out their intense sweetness. Serve with low fat ice cream, yoghurt or creme fraiche as a delicious end to a meal with fewer calories.
